Like to Join Us?

Just come along to a meeting, shown in the Program below. There's no pressure to pay a subscription immediately - see if you think it's for you, come to a couple of meetings first. Should you wish to join, the annual membership fee would be payable - currently $55 p.a.for individuals or $75 for families (reduced to a proportionate amount if joining from January onwards).

The majority of our meetings are on Mondays, at 7.15pm in Room 215 of Dupuis Hall, on Queen's University campus. As a general principle, meetings are on the first and third Mondays of each month from mid-September through May, but some adjustments are made to accommodate other events, so other days may be used. The 2011-2012 Program is bigger than ever! Follow the Program, below, for the actual dates. Other locations are occasionally used. The main Queen's University location that the club uses has wheelchair and elevator access. In the case of our normal location in Room 215 of Dupuis Hall, the wheelchair access is in Clergy Street, at the Northern end of the building, with the elevator situated inside the main entrance (Division Street) lobby: the door in Clergy Street needs to be opened from the inside. Here's a map. pdf.

Welcome

The members of the Kingston Photographic Club, of Ontario, meet twice-monthly or more, September to May, to learn more about their mutual interest in the art and craft of photography. It doesn't matter whether you take your pictures with a "Box-Brownie" or one of the latest hi-tech multi-megapixel marvels - film* or digital, colour or black and white. There are also plenty of newcomers to photography who enjoy the friendship in the club and benefit from the knowledge of the more experienced members, our meetings and this website.

Program 2011-2012

If any member (or even website visitor) has an idea for inclusion in the program, like a particular location for a group meet-up or something in particular for an evening meeting, do not hesitate to contact a committee member.

All regular Monday evening meetings will commence at 7.15pm

Awards Night

(probably Colonnade GCC)

Please note that we cannot guarantee to 'teach' you how to use your camera - some self-help, studying and reading is essential. What we can do, gradually, is introduce new photographers to different styles, effects and composition ideas and then discuss the technical issues involved. Current members range from students to retirees, and from very experienced photographers to novices. We are quite liberal on our interpretation of photography, and encourage experimentation at all stages of the process of making a picture. Categories in our competitions are for Prints, Pictorial slides (film and digital) and Nature. The club does not 'compete' with other clubs except in a very friendly way with an annual 'multi-club' meeting.
* - After a brief survey in 2009, very few members (less than three?) are still actually using film, though many have used 'darkroom technology' in the past. I believe that nobody now actively uses a darkroom and the club do not have access to one. However, film users are more than welcome - there's still an interest in the medium. The main 'Club Competition', of which there are currently three rounds annually, is for prints and both film and digital slides - so if you're a film enthusiast you can still take part..... but you may like to be prepared to make a presentation or demonstration, to the club, of film processing and printing!
Film vs Digital - which is better?

The aim of the Kingston Photographic Club?

  • To provide an environment for members to compare their work
(Competitions, Exhibitions, 'Show and Tell' etc.)

  • Challenge members to try new kinds of photography
    (Themed competitions and challenges)

  • Provide a place for members to learn more about their hobby
    (Presentations, website learning, critique)

We have a varied programme of speakers, a large annual exhibition, outings, friendly slide and print competitions, a monthly online competition, a regular newsletter and, perhaps most importantly, the opportunity to discuss your problems and successes with like-minded people. You will also find a plethora of learning material on the Workshop page of this website, and we also have Learning Assignments for you to try.

If you're a Facebook user, this report is worth a read.
