Welcome

The members of the Kingston Photographic Club, of Ontario, meet twice-monthly, September to May, to share and discuss ideas, and to learn more about their mutual interest in the art and craft of photography. It doesn't matter whether you take your pictures with a "Box-Brownie" or one of the latest hi-tech multi-megapixel marvels - film* or digital, colour or black and white. Many of our members (currently around 65, our highest level for many years and still growing) are experienced in many different aspects of photography - nature, pictorial, abstract, night and studio, printing, display - and most of the techniques of film* and digital processing. There are also plenty of newcomers to photography who enjoy the friendship in the club and benefit from the knowledge of the more experienced members, our meetings and this website.

* - After a brief survey in 2009, very few members are still actually using film, though many have used 'darkroom technology' in the past. I believe that nobody now actively uses a darkroom and the club do not have access to one.

Do you enjoy taking pictures but feel they lack that certain 'something' you've seen in other people's photos? Do you have trouble finding the enthusiasm to get out there and shoot? Do you have lots of digital images that need a little work? Or do you have a lot of fantastic shots you would like to share with others or find out how they really stand up? The KPC could be your solution!

The aim of the Kingston Photographic Club?

  • Provide an environment for members to compare their work
(Competitions, Exhibitions, 'Show and Tell' etc.)
  • Challenge members to try new kinds of photography
    (Themed competitions and challenges)
  • Provide a place for members to learn more about their hobby
    (Technical presentations, website learning)
Then you will start to get a lot more out of your hobby than putting some annual holiday snaps in an album.
We have a varied programme of guest and club speakers, photo-clinics with professional critique, a large annual exhibition, outings, friendly slide and print competitions, a monthly online competition, a regular newsletter and, perhaps most importantly, the opportunity to discuss your problems and successes with like-minded people. Field trips and seminars are organized to allow members to get out and do some shooting with a specific purpose in mind or learn how the experts do it. This year, 2010, we have started a 'Summer Program' of informal photo-shoots in nearby locations.
Photographers who excel at their art are those who are out there at every opportunity; learning from others, learning by teaching others and learning from their own mistakes. The KPC has experts in many fields of photography in its membership and you would have the opportunity to do all of these things and more for your membership fee.
Come to a meeting or contact the club via the Contact page for information on how to join and improve your photography. There's no pressure to pay a subscription immediately, so just come along and see if you think it's for you.
The majority of our meetings are on alternate Mondays, at 7.30pm in Room 215 of Dupuis Hall, on Queen's University campus. As a general principle, meetings are on the first and third Mondays of each month from mid-September through May, but some adjustments are made to accommodate other events, so other days may be used. Follow the Program, below, for the actual dates. Other locations are occasionally used. The Queen's University classrooms that the club uses all have wheelchair and elevator access. In the case of our normal location in Room 215 of Dupuis Hall, the wheelchair access is in Clergy Street, at the Northern end of the building, with the elevator situated in the main entrance (Division Street) lobby.

If any member (or even website visitor) has an idea for inclusion in the program, like a particular location for a group meet-up or something in particular for an evening meeting, do not hesitate to contact a committee member.

Summer Program - Photo Meet 1

Presqu'ile Park, Near Brighton (website)

Our first location and, after a dull start, the weather turned out to be perfect..... but made photography a bit difficult with the brightness and contrast to contend with. Ten members met at the Park and Ride, but only eight actually got to the park - no idea what happened there. It was a longer drive than I expected but well worth it, though I had a feeling that, as photographers, we'd have preferred to have been there at either dawn or dusk, especially along the "Marsh Boardwalk". I thought we'd have to go trekking to find interesting subjects but the most interesting birds seemed to be happy to stay around the Lighthouse information centre (and BBQ). So, a good day out and, more than anything, a new venue for the members and perhaps some will return.... I think it needs an overnight stay, for the evening and dawn shots.

Summer Program - Photo Meet 1A

Barriefield Rock Garden.

Well, that was different - we managed to choose the only stormy evening of the week (and the darkest evening of the month). Try as I may, I still failed to capture any lightning, even with very long exposures - and I lost count of the number of times my shutter had just closed when the sky suddenly lit up! Those that found it for the first time now know that it's a great little venue, though it wasn't as 'blooming' as it can be.
(just across the causeway, left on Hwy 15 and 1st left, then left again, to small carpark at end)
I suggest 7.00pm.

Summer Program - Photo Meet 1B

Wolfe Island

Disappointing light on a cloudy evening, light rain. All I can say is that it was a pleasant thing to do on a dull evening. Five of us made the trip but, due to a late ferry we didn't get over there until nearly 7.30pm and it was pointless staying past 8.30 due to the light. Easy enough to try again some time. Though I wish the island had a hill somewhere so you could get a decent perspective on the windmills.
er, Wolfe Island...

Sunday 6 June

Summer Program - Photo Meet 2

Arranged by the "Algonquin to Adirondacks" Group for us. "Lost Lake"

Well we had a wonderful afternoon.... only one problem - we went in the morning! The rain didn't let up until we were on our way back around 1pm, having got a thorough drenching. This is a great location for naturalists, macro specialists, landscapers, all sorts. Not all that far to drive and what should, on a nice day, be an interesting location. Very scenic lake views. In the words of Arnold - we'll be back. The Reserve is open all the time, but check details first, with either me or Emily Conger, the A2A president. Two pictures from Joe Furtado sum up the conditions.

Tuesday 8th June

Summer Program - an Extra 2b

Barriefield Rock Garden - Another Try

Going by the weather forecast, Tuesday looks as if it will be far better than our last attempt!
Well, a definite improvement since our last visit. Very pleasant evening - not a spectacular sunset, and a lot of the flowers have come and gone again, better than nothing though.
Around 6.45pm - Across Causeway, up Hwy to Hwy15, turn left and immediately left again, and then left again... carpark at the end.
Saturday 19th June

Summer Program - Photo Meet 3

SpindleTree Gardens

Success!! Good weather - humid but with a thin cloud layer, giving an ideal soft light. Plenty to see and photograph, with flowers, insects, woods, bushes, water, ponds, and insects. Really good afternoon out, with about three hours of photography, including the insects. Like anywhere, it would have been interesting to see it at dawn or dusk, but the soft light made us bit more creative. Several insects. A pleasant tea and scones to finish. Did I mention insects? Slideshow now on Galleries Page.

Saturday 24 July

Worldwide Photowalk, Kingston

I haven't seen a full report on this but lots of pictures, including some from our members, have been posted on Flickr.
0930 Confederation Park

Potential Locations

Sundays:
  • Gananoque in the morning and then 'BalleyCanoeCo' a little further East for the afternoon. I'm going East to PEI and NS between June 27 and July 11, so if somebody else would like to coordinate this I'm sure there would be quite a few interested. As an even bigger day out, you could even add the "Creepy Motel on Hwy2", then Gan, then the Canoe Co.
Midweek suggestions include
  • A Walkabout around the 'Victorian' area of Kingston to the East of City Park, (maybe the World PhotoWalk takes care of this one).
  • A longer visit to Fort Henry
  • An evening cruise on the 1000 Islands cruise boat!
  • The stretch of the Cataraqui Trail between King St West and Bath Road
  • Le Moine Point
  • Kingston Mills
  • McBurney Park
  • Doug Fleur Park
......the list goes on.... so many places, so little time! Plenty of other places for photo opportunities (Buskers Festival, Poker Run etc) but I'm just going for 'group meetings' for now. At this point, it may be worth planning a meeting for every Sunday and every midweek!

Program 2010-2011

A very basic outline of the program so far, all subject to amendment. Unless otherwise indicated, all meetings are held in Room 215, Dupuis Hall, Queens University, corner of Union St and Division St (map above)

Three Club Competitions, eight monthly online competitions, three Image Clinics and an exhibition - that could take a lot of pictures, inspiration and effort. So how do you get the creative urges going again?

Here are some ideas....
  • Surf the Web - A few minutes spent on Google Images, Flickr and other gallery sites will help get the photographic urge back. Pictures rather than words stimulate the creative thoughts, but looking for simple photographic topics can often lead to good ideas. Lots of links here.
  • Exhibitions/Galleries We're lucky – living in Kingston means there is always a range of galleries showing pictures from all manner of photographers, nearly all free. An hour or so spent looking at someone else’s shots as big prints, rather than on a computer screen, always inspires. Check out the various galleries listed on the website.
  • Books The bonus of libraries is that there’s no bookshelf space dilemma at home and they’re free! You can always fill in a suggestion card for new titles – a few months after asking for "more photography books, please!" you may find a nice fresh little stock appearing on the shelves: if you don’t ask, you don’t get! And don't forget the club's very own library of books and magazines - the books are only a couple of dollars for the loan. If there's something special you want to find out, send your question to me first - I don't know all the answers but I can certainly get them for you and/or point you in the right direction. Don't forget the website has a 'Question and Answer' page, but you can send questions to me direct.
  • Change your Daily Routine Always walk the same way to work? Take the same bus or train? Comfortable in the same Saturday morning routine? Introduce a change. Find a new area or some different streets to roam during your lunch break. Check out a part of the City you don't get to very often and see what your lens comes across.
  • Submit Photographs, Enter Competitions It’s always helpful to get feedback on your shots via sites like Flickr, but nothing beats the buzz of seeing a picture you took in the local paper or short-listed for a competition. When you know you’ve done well, you can’t fail but want to do more and better! Local papers often look for pictures from your area and most nationals run regular competitions, both in paper and online. A quick search of the Internet may bring up some interesting and inspiring opportunities. Why not give it a whirl – you may be pleasantly surprised! Local competitions often appear on the club website but I can't cover all of them, so keep your eye out.
